In these times of budget restrictions, it is essential to identify the most appropriate public funding continuously accessible. In addition to the usual i-Lab competition and i-Novthere are several Bpifrance grants that can be mobilized on an ongoing basis, depending on the maturity of your company, the nature of your project and your equity capital.
What public assistance is available for startups and innovative SMEs?
Startups less than a year old: grants to kick-start innovation
Young innovative companies can take advantage of special schemes to finance the initial stages of their projects:
- French Tech Emergence grant (BFT)
- For start-ups with a research, development and innovation project less than a year old.
- Maximum project budget: €70k (duration 12 to 36 months).
- Minimum equity requirement: €20k.
- Assistance in the form of 50 k€ grant with an intervention rate of 70 %.
- French Tech Deeptech grant (BFTE)
- For breakthrough innovation projects resulting from research work (public or private laboratory).
- Required equity capital: €20k.
- Assistance in the form of 90 k€ grant with an intervention rate of 70 %.
Please note: in Paris, these subsidies are replaced by the Paris Innovation Fund (FPI)which offers a maximum subsidy of €30,000 for start-ups under three years of age incubated in an accredited structure.
Start-ups over one year old and SMEs: financing to accelerate development
More mature companies can access schemes adapted to their stage of development and the nature of their innovation:
- Innovation Grant
- For R&D and innovation projects.
- Maximum project budget: €100k (12 to 36 months).
- Equity at least equivalent to the amount of aid requested (€30k to €50k).
- Assistance in the form of 50 k€ grant50 % (up to 70 % for the French Tech axis).
- Innovation Advance
- For innovation projects with identified hazards.
- Help in the form of recoverable advance from 50 k€ to 3 M€ (up to 50 % of the project budget, capped at equity).
- Payment in two instalments, project duration 36 months maximum.
- Deeptech development aid
- For breakthrough innovations before their industrial and commercial launch.
- Mixed aid : 60 % in subsidies and 40 % in recoverable advancesup to €2 million and covering up to 45 % of eligible expenditure.
- Project duration: 36 months maximum, with deferred repayment for up to 36 months.

Finance the study and structuring of your project with Bpifrance Diagnostics
Even before you apply for financing, it is possible toaccess funded services (up to 50 %) to help structure your innovation project.
The Bpifrance Innovation Focus Diagnostic is a process for identifying and structuring areas of innovation within your company.
This diagnosis can include services such as: ideation to integrate innovation into the company's strategy, technical and techno-economic pre-studies, market research or the filing of a first French patent.
- Diagnostic eligibility criteria
- Be an SME or ETI (with fewer than 2,000 employees) committed to innovation.
- Expenditure base: maximum €16,000 inc. tax, with Bpifrance contributing 50 %.
- Work begins as of the filing date
